Surf City

Surf City El Salvador is a major tourism initiative launched in 2019 by the Salvadoran government to promote the country’s Pacific coastline as a premier surfing and adventure destination. It highlights over 70 world-class surf spots along roughly 198 miles (about 320 km) of coastline, stretching from east to west, with consistent, warm waves suitable for beginners through to professional surfers year-round.

The project has transformed parts of the coast into a vibrant hub for surf tourism, complete with improved infrastructure, events, and branding. While it encompasses many beaches and towns, the epicenter and most famous spot is El Tunco (often called the heart of Surf City), a lively beach town in the La Libertad department, just west of San Salvador. El Tunco features rocky shores, powerful point breaks and beach breaks (like nearby Punta Roca, now a stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour), black-sand beaches, and a fun, laid-back vibe with plenty of surf schools, hostels, boutique hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightlife.
